The 3 Sounds of “-ed”
Click each word to hear the sound. Practice saying them out loud after the voice!
Sound: /ɪd/
Rule: Extra Syllable
Use this when the base verb ends in a T or D sound.
Sound: /t/
Rule: The “Quiet” Sound
Use this for “quiet” endings like P, K, S, SH, CH, or F.
Sound: /d/
Rule: The “Vibrating” Sound
Use this for “vibrating” endings like L, N, R, or vowels.
Parent’s Teaching Tip: The Throat Test
Have your child place their hand on their throat while saying the base word (like “Play”). If they feel a vibration (buzzing), it’s a “D” sound. If they feel no vibration (like “Walk”), it’s a “T” sound. If the word ends in T or D, we always add the “ID” sound to make it easier to say!
