1 Active Conversation

To keep a conversation alive, use the “Answer + Question Back” technique.

The Volley Rule

When someone “serves” a question, hit it back! Always follow your answer with a question for them.

Workplace Dialogue: Tom & Amy

Tom
“Hey Amy! You survived that client call. You look pretty slammed though. Do you have a lot on your plate today?”
Amy (Volley)
“Tell me about it! I’m buried in emails after that call. I just need to power through this report. How about you? Are you wrapping up for the day or are you stuck here late too?
Tom
“I’m almost done, just need to touch base with marketing. I’m actually planning to grab a bite at that new spot downstairs at 1:00. Do you want to join, or are you too busy to step away?
Amy (Volley)
“I’d love to! I definitely need a break from this screen. Give me ten minutes? By the way, have you tried their coffee yet, or should we just go for lunch?

Tom
“Hey Amy! What’s up?”
Amy (Volley)
“Hey! Not much. You okay? You look tired.
Tom (Volley)
“Yeah, I barely slept. How about you—how was your day?
Amy (Volley)
“Busy. I had a ton of work. What kept you up?
Tom (Volley)
“I was watching YouTube and totally lost track of time. Do you do that too?
Amy (Volley)
“All the time. What were you watching?
Tom (Volley)
“Random stuff—travel videos mostly. Where would you go if you could travel anywhere?
Amy (Volley)
“Ooh, maybe Japan. What about you?
Tom (Volley)
“Same, honestly. By the way, are you free tonight?
Amy (Volley)
“Maybe. Why, what’s the plan?
Tom (Volley)
“I was thinking dinner. Are you hungry?
Amy (Volley)
“Yeah, kinda. What do you feel like eating?
Tom (Volley)
“Something easy—no heavy food. Want ramen?
Amy (Volley)
“Sounds good. What time?
Tom (Volley)
“7? Does that work for you?
Amy (Volley)
“Perfect. Wanna meet at the station?
Tom
“Yeah. See you there!”
